About Penguin News
About The Newspaper Penguin News was founded in October 1979 by islander Graham Bound. The first edition was an A5-sized black and white publication, a far cry from today’s A4 paper which is usually 24 pages long with plenty of colour. Originally launched as a monthly publication, Penguin News is now published weekly each Friday and is the
Falkland Islands ’ only newspaper.
The paper was originally funded by the Falkland Islands Government, and the Media Trust was formed by Ordinance to ensure independence from Government and/or other influential parties in the
Falklands . Now that the paper is financially independent, the role of the Media Trust is similar to that of Directors of a company with most responsibilities delegated to the Managing Editor on a day to day basis.
As a community newspaper, we report on local news and politics, local sports, social events and other aspects of local life. Some of our most popular regular spots are “Letters to the Editor” , our classified advertising pages and our weekly “Give Us Two Minutes” interview with a local resident.
We are proud to reach almost the entire local population, with a circulation of 1,500 per week and an enviable readership figure of 98%. In fact, Friday is affectionately known as “Penguin News Day” locally. As the only local newspaper, a subscription to Penguin News is the ideal way to keep abreast of developments in the islands, political issues and local events, and as a result we boast subscribers from the most far-flung corners of the globe.
The Penguin News website was created in 2004 and allows users to view the front and back pages of the weekly newspaper for free. Alternatively, paid subscriptions are available for those who want access to the whole paper each week.
Our Team Penguin News is run by a small team, consisting of a Managing Editor, Deputy Editor, a Reporter and an Office Manager, who work closely together to produce the paper each week.
